Migrating from Cognos 7 to IBM Cognos 8 BI led to a substantial reduction in BI management costs due to the architectural nature of the new IBM Cognos 8 BI system (central vs. decentral).  Secondly, a big reduction in reports could be achieved due to the new, extensive reporting functionality of IBM Cognos 8 BI vs. Cognos 7, lowering costs even more and augmenting user satisfaction.
Finally, due to the successful migration, Telenet was able to close the reporting era of Cognos 7 enabling them to stop software license maintenance with inevitably another big financial impact.

THE CHALLENGE

At the start of the migration project we chose to work according to a combination of 2 migration strategies:

  • Pure technical (1-on-1) migration .
  • Optimization migration : entire BI solution is analysed and redesigned before migration.

By combining both strategies, Telenet had to invest in a functional and technical analysis phase before starting the migration, but enabled us to significantly reduce the number of migrating objects by 25%, which caused a reduction in project migration time. After rationalizing, migration was conducted not only using migration tools but also through manual intervention extending reporting functionality.
THE SOLUTION
The project was achieved iteratively with each iteration breaking down in a functional and technical analysis phase, a migration phase and a test phase.  These iterations were executed partially in parallel in order to reduce total project time while benefiting from lessons learned from earlier iterations.
The migrated reporting solution now, is entirely based on IBM Cognos 8 BI technology, leveraging enriched reporting capabilities, lower total cost of ownership en enhanced user satisfaction.
